Global Media Intelligence 2021: Taiwan

Noteworthy in 2021

Time devoted to live TV, digital video, and music streaming all increased.

  • In Q1 2021, the share of Taiwan’s internet users who watched live TV in the previous month was essentially the same as in H1 2020, at 79.2%. However, internet users spent 1 hour, 37 minutes (1:37) per day, on average, with live TV in H1 2021—compared with 1:26 in 2020.
  • Nearly two-thirds (64.0%) of internet users had watched TV broadcasters’ catch-up services in the month prior as of Q1 2021. This share, too, was virtually identical to the H1 2020 figure. There was a slight increase in the proportion of respondents who recorded TV shows to watch later.
  • Penetration of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services like Netflix leaped from 37.3% in H1 2020 to 48.1% in Q1 2021—though this share remained lower than in many other countries.
