Executive Summary

The number of social network users worldwide continues to grow, expected to pass 3 billion in 2020. The four leading social networks—Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter—are still gaining users worldwide. But growth is concentrated in Asia-Pacific and other developing markets, and slowing in Western Europe. Local social networks in China and Russia are also gaining users, which will help drive social network usage worldwide.

In 2019, an estimated 2.95 billion people, or 77.0% of internet users globally, will use a social network at least once per month.

Which are the largest markets for social networking?

China and India rank first and second, making Asia-Pacific the leading region with more than 1.73 billion people using social networks in 2019.

Emerging markets are generally growing faster than more advanced economies. Indonesia and India top the list in 2019; several African and Middle Eastern markets are also expanding rapidly.
